I'd Rather Do Chemo Than Clean Out the Garage

Fran Di Giacomo

Pearls of wisdom balance hilarious fun in this shameless exploitation of the chemo lifestyle. Fran Di Giacomo shares the game plan she has used for survival, for quality of life, and to maintain her career as a professional artist. «As a career member of the Chemo Club, I have lived with cancer for twenty years,» writes Fran. «In the last five years, I have had thirteen hospitalizations, ten surgeries, and constant chemotherapy. Staying alive is a full-time job. I grew impatient with the usual sob stories dealing with cancer; we don't need tears, we need backbone and laughter! I show readers how to cultivate a new zest and enthusiasm for life and thereby empower themselves to combat their disease.»

Health For US All

Dr Mary Zennett

The principles of health reform are actually simple, but remain formidable due to the size and complexity of the necessary implementation. The purpose of this book, in this era of health reform, is to educate and offer potential solutions that represent an actual overhaul of the existing health care system, based on core-level principles and values:
People and principles before profits and paperwork, founded on the Hippocratic Oath-do no harm.
The book integrates a health reform model that incorporates health, wellness and prevention into the current illness delivery model, predicted to bankrupt the U.S. economy faster than any other sector without massive reform. Hence the urgency for widespread education on these vital reform principles- before it is too late.

Contagious Divides

Nayan Shah

Contagious Divides charts the dynamic transformation of representations of Chinese immigrants from medical menace in the nineteenth century to model citizen in the mid-twentieth century. Examining the cultural politics of public health and Chinese immigration in San Francisco, this book looks at the history of racial formation in the U.S. by focusing on the development of public health bureaucracies. Nayan Shah notes how the production of Chinese difference and white, heterosexual norms in public health policy affected social lives, politics, and cultural expression. Public health authorities depicted Chinese immigrants as filthy and diseased, as the carriers of such incurable afflictions as smallpox, syphilis, and bubonic plague. This resulted in the vociferous enforcement of sanitary regulations on the Chinese community. But the authorities did more than demon-ize the Chinese; they also marshaled civic resources that promoted sewer construction, vaccination programs, and public health management. Shah shows how Chinese Americans responded to health regulations and allegations with persuasive political speeches, lawsuits, boycotts, violent protests, and poems. Chinese American activists drew upon public health strategies in their advocacy for health services and public housing. Adroitly employing discourses of race and health, these activists argued that Chinese Americans were worthy and deserving of sharing in the resources of American society.

Hoop, heling & harmonie

Body Respect

Linda Bacon

Mainstream health science has let you down.Weight loss is not the key to health, diet and exercise are not effective weight-loss strategies and fatness is not a death sentence. You’ve heard it before: there’s a global health crisis, and, unless we make some changes, we’re in trouble. That much is true—but the epidemic is NOT obesity. The real crisis lies in the toxic stigma placed on certain bodies and the impact of living with inequality—not the numbers on a scale. In a mad dash to shrink our bodies, many of us get so caught up in searching for the perfect diet, exercise program, or surgical technique that we lose sight of our original goal: improved health and well-being. Popular methods for weight loss don’t get us there and lead many people to feel like failures when they can’t match unattainable body standards. It’s time for a cease-fire in the war against obesity.Dr. Linda Bacon and Dr. Lucy Aphramor’s Body Respect debunks common myths about weight, including the misconceptions that BMI can accurately measure health, that fatness necessarily leads to disease, and that dieting will improve health. They also help make sense of how poverty and oppression—such as racism, homophobia, and classism—affect life opportunity, self-worth, and even influence metabolism.Body insecurity is rampant, and it doesn’t have to be. It’s time to overcome our culture’s shame and distress about weight, to get real about inequalities and health, and to show every body respect.
