There is much in this book that will interest the English artist. The story of the painter's life is plainly told – with just enough, scattered here and there, of filial affection and partiality to take it out of the level of ordinary biographies. The journals are rather short, and the correspondence is somewhat scanty, but the matter is generally good, and some of the criticisms will be found both original and suggestive. William Collins, the father of well-known author Wilkie Collins, was born in Great Titchfield Street, London, on the 18th of September 1788. His father was a native of Wicklow – his mother was a Scottish lady, born in the neighbourhood of Edinburgh. «It was a favourite tradition in the family of the painter,» writes his son, «that they were descended from the same stock as the great poet whose name they bore;»—a pleasing belief rendered additionally interesting by some anecdotes.
Political Theories of the Middle Age
This excellent book is a translation of a very small portion of Dr. Gierke's " Deutsches Genossenschaftsrecht, " being the section entitled " Die Publizistischen Lehren des Mittelalters. " Its ten chapters treat of the following questions : The evolution of political theory under the diverse influences of ancient philosophy and law, medieval theology, local custom; Macrocosm and microcosm, i.e., the relation of the whole of society to its parts and vice versa from the medieval viewpoint; unity in Church and State, wherein are discussed the warring positions of parties in both, evolved by the length of the contest between the papacy and the empire; the idea of organization, i.e., of society as an organism; the idea of monarchy, its derivation from God, its consequent relations with the plenitudo potestatis of the papacy; the idea of popular sovereignty, its conflicts and combinations with the ruler's sovereignty, first in the temporal sphere, second, analogous developments of the idea as applied to the government of the Church, somewhat painfully brought out by the conciliar movement; the idea of representation; the idea of personality, i.e., of justice or legal personality applied to the Church and State or to minor corporations; the relation of the state to the law, natural and positive; the beginnings of the modern state, i.e., those elements in medieval doctrine that led up to the modern idea of the state. One half of the book is devoted to notes that elucidate the text of the cited authorities, a long list of which, both ancient and modern, is given. The mere enumeration of the titles of the chapters and the fact that the translation has been undertaken by so eminent a legal historian as Mr. Maitland are a warrant that the work is important, even for those who are not disposed to accept Dr. Gierke's views on faith. English – speaking readers in general must find it interesting, accustomed as they are to look on medieval thought as mere idle speculation of the logicians; as if political theories did not then, as now, agitate men's minds and lay the foundations for much of those political blessings that we now enjoy, or think we do. To a close observer of the development of government in the Catholic Church some portions will be, not merely interesting, but absorbing. They may even be instructive, though at the sacrifice of some preconceptions.

Corrientes pedagógicas contemporáneas
El autor utiliza intencionalmente el término Corrientes pedagógicas en lugar de teorías, para evitar al lector precisiones epistemológicas que seguramente preferirá pasar por alto. Al fin y al cabo, de lo que se trata es de mostrar, apoyado en las fuentes directas de los autores analizados, las ideas que han tenido más influencia en el saber sobre la educación en la época contemporánea. Esta influencia no se enmarca necesariamente en una ubicación temporal.Así el pragmatismo de John Dewey, después de algunos años de olvido, ha vuelto a actualizarse en numerosas reediciones de sus obras y trabajos sobre su pensamiento educativo, entre ellos no pocas tesis doctorales. Algo similar ocurre con los escritos sobre educación de Antonio Gramsci. A los que gustan repetir sin demasiada crítica lo que suponen es el dogma marxista sobre la educación deberían leer al comunista sardo para ver cómo el marxismo ha tenido pensadores profundos que no se han apartado de las grandes líneas del pensamiento educativo clásico, sin caer en apologías políticas del momento. La ciencia de la educación, es decir, la pedagogía, durante el siglo XX recibió aportes y críticas desde todo el ámbito de las humanidades y las ciencias sociales. Filosofía del lenguaje, psicoanálisis, conductismo, pragmatismo, culturalismo, marxismo, realismo filosófico actualizado, son corrientes que han tenido grandes pensadores interesados en la educación. El autor no oculta sus preferencias, pero como es un entusiasta adherente del espíritu que dio origen a la Universidad, considera que estas concepciones deben ser confrontadas, apoyándose siempre en las fuentes directas, para considerar sin prejuicios (en la medida en que esto es posible) la verdad que cada una contiene.

Here William Dean Howells has written down the interesting facts of his life up to the time he went abroad as U. S. consul; and not only the facts , but also the early impressions and numerous influences which went to mold the man and the writer. Born in 1837 , at Martin's Ferry , Ohio , of mingled Welsh, German, English and Irish stock, the young son of a printer and publisher could set type almost from babyhood. Love of reading supplemented irregular schooling. He tells of his first efforts at writing, of the broad religious tolerant spirit in his father's home , of his first experience of politics and the abolitionist movement. The family moved later to Dayton, and the young printer – for he worked hard to help his father – found a new interest here in the theater. In later chapters he pictures the life at the State Capital, Columbus, over a half century ago , with its political and social interests, and describes his own youthful enthusiasms. Here he aided his father in reporting the sessions of the legislature. When the family moved again to Ashtabula, young Howells varied his printing labors with the study of foreign languages. As a reporter for the Cincinnati Gazette and later for the Ohio State Journal he knew and revered the prominent journalists of the Middle West. This chronicling of his early literary successes and his first entrance into the Atlantic Monthly's charmed circle show the future author with his feet firmly set on his life's road.
