El agente secreto
Inquieta recordar que un paisaje terrorífico muy semejante al que se vivió en Londres el 7 de julio de 2005 apareció descrito hace casi un siglo por Joseph Conrad en El agente secreto. Esto podría significar dos cosas: una, que los artistas se adelantan, a veces fatalmente, a su tiempo, y otra, que la humanidad no avanza, sino da vueltas sobre sí misma, fiel a sus miserias. Al final, lo que Conrad vio en la absurda actividad terrorista fue a una «humanidad siempre tan trágicamente dispuesta a la autodestrucción».
Corazón de las tinieblas
Comparando lo que sabemos del viaje que, cuando era marino, efectivamente Conrad hizo al Congo, el de su personaje Marlow es acaso más complejo e interesante porque suma, a las dificultades prácticas, toda una serie de reflexiones y dilemas morales de los cuales nos enteramos a través de la voz de dos narradores: el primero, uno de los innominados oyentes del relato de Marlow y, otro, el propio Marlow, protagonista de su historia y a la vez testigo de la del misterioso agente Kurtz. Se observará entonces que hay allí tres planos superpuestos que permiten considerar la complejidad de un texto de apariencia sencilla, tan lleno de meandros y remolinos como el curso del río Congo que penetra «cada vez más adentro del corazón de las tinieblas», en las que se encuentra el alguna vez civilizado Kurtz, cuyo corazón es, asimismo, «de una impenetrable oscuridad».
