Figura destacada del llamado «Grupo de Bloomsbury», Virginia Woolf fue autora de una serie de relatos que la sitúan en la vanguardia del movimiento renovador de las técnicas narrativas. Fue en la amalgama de sentimientos, pensamientos y emociones, que es la subjetividad, donde Woolf encontró el material apropiado para una narrativa que contribuyó a forjar la sensibilidad contemporánea. «Escribía contra la corriente», según afirma la narradora y guionista argentina Virginia Cosin. Eso significa que lo hacía "contra las modas, lo esperable, la museificación de la lengua; a favor de la imaginación, de la sensación, del devenir. Las tormentas eléctricas que se desataron en su mente todavía refulgen como rayos que continúan iluminándonos". A sus cincuenta y nueve años, Woolf decidió quitarse la vida. En ese entonces escribió a su esposo: «Querido: Creo que voy a enloquecer de nuevo. Siento que no podemos atravesar otro de esos tiempos horribles. Y esta vez no me recuperaré. Comienzo a eso que es lo mejor…», escribió a mano sobre una hoja de papel.

Virginia Woolfi (1882–1941) peetakse üheks XX sajandi tähtsamaks modernistlikuks autoriks.
