The Complete Christmas Books and Stories of Charles Dickens

    Charles Dickens

This edition brings together the complete Christmas books and short stories of Charles Dickens. While readers will be most familiar with «The Christmas Carol» in which Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by four ghosts who endeavor to show him the error of his miserly ways just in time for Christmas, Dickens also wrote four other Christmas themed books. These include «The Chimes», the story of Toby «Trotty» Veck, a poor working-class man who has lost his faith in humanity and believes that his poverty is the result of his unworthiness; «The Cricket on the Hearth», the story of John Peerybingle and his family who are visited by a guardian angel in the form of a cricket who is constantly chirping on their hearth; «The Battle of Life» a charmingly uplifting and romantic Christmas story; and «The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain», which is the story of Redlaw, a chemistry teacher constantly brooding over the grief caused by wrongs done to him in the past. Along with these novels is included a complete collection of Dickens' Christmas short stories which include the following: A Christmas Tree, What Christmas is as We Grow Older, The Poor Relation's Story, The Child's Story, The Schoolboy's Story, Nobody's Story, The Seven Poor Travellers, The Holly-Tree, The Wreck of the Golden Mary, The Perils of Certain English Prisoners, Going into Society, The Haunted House, A Message from the Sea, Tom Tiddler's Ground, Somebody's Luggage, Mrs. Lirriper's Lodgings, Mrs. Lirriper's Legacy, Doctor Marigold, The Trial for Murder, The Signal-Man, Mugby Junction, and No Thoroughfare.

    The Old Curiosity Shop

    Charles Dickens

First published as a weekly serial in 1841, «The Old Curiosity Shop» is a novel that details the life of a young orphaned girl named Nell Trent. She lives with her loving grandfather in his London curiosity shop, until a gamble for wealth forces them to leave for the English countryside, penniless. After their departure, they are sought by both friends who wish to help them and cruel men with harmful designs. The pair of beggars ultimately experience the extremes of human loyalty and villainy in their state of abject poverty. Although one of his lesser known works, Dickens artfully displays a cast of diverse characters in a tale that captivates readers to its tragic conclusion.

    Hard Times

    Charles Dickens

"Hard Times" is the 1854 novel by Charles Dickens that sought to highlight the social and economic divide that was growing between capitalistic mill owners and workers during the Victorian era of Great Britain. Originally published in serial form in Dickens's own periodical journal «Household Words», «Hard Times» is unique in that it is not set in London, like many of his works, but in the fictitious Victorian town of Coketown. A critical examination of the poor working conditions in many English factory towns of the time as well as the changing nature of the aristocracy and the working-class in the post industrial revolution era is at the heart of Dickens's Classic novel, «Hard Times».

    Our Mutual Friend

    Charles Dickens

When a rich miser dies, his inheritance is to pass to his estranged son John Harmon, who must return from South Africa to claim it, on condition that he marries a woman he has never met, Miss Bella Wilfer. When John Harmon goes missing and is presumed dead, the fortune passes instead to the miser’s faithful employees Mr. and Mrs. Boffin. Rich with psychological and social insight into the effects of money on society, «Our Mutual Friend», the last novel that Charles Dickens completed is considered by many to be one of his most sophisticated works.

    Oliver Twist

    Charles Dickens

"Oliver Twist", Charles Dicken's second novel, is the classic story of the struggles of a young orphan in 19th century England. An early social novel, Dickens draws upon the political issues of child labor and the struggles of the poor. Originally serialized in «Bentley's Miscellany» between February 1837 and April 1839, «Oliver Twist» is one of Dickens early classics.

    A Tale of Two Cities

    Charles Dickens

"It was the best of times, it was the worst times," so begins the famous first lines of one of Charles Dickens most popular novels. «A Tale of Two Cities» is a story set in the late 18th century during the French Revolution and the title cities in question are that of London and Paris. At the heart of the novel is the story of a young Englishman who sacrifices his life to save the husband of a woman he loves. «A Tale of Two Cities» is a classic love story set against the backdrop of political upheaval and revolution.

    Sketches by Boz

    Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English short story writer, dramatist, essayist, and the most popular novelist to come from the Victorian era. He created some of the most iconic characters and stories in English literature, including Mr. Pickwick from «The Pickwick Papers», Ebenezer Scrooge from «A Christmas Carol», David Copperfield, and Pip from «Great Expectations», to name a few. Dickens' began by writing serials for magazines, and from 1833-1836 he used the pseudonym Boz, taken from a childhood nickname for his younger brother. «Sketches by Boz» contains 56 stories and, like most of Dickens' work, vividly portrayed the lives of Londoners around him in an effort to illustrate social injustices and promote reform. Unlike less successful writers of the time who divided whole works into serialized episodes, Dickens often gauged public reaction to each installment, allowing himself to tailor the plot accordingly. This collection is divided into four sections: «The Parish,» «Scenes,» «Characters,» and «Tales.»

    Little Dorrit

    Charles Dickens

Characteristic of Dickens' later writings, «Little Dorrit» is a social condemnation, particularly of the system of prisons set aside for the debtors of England. Through the memorable characters of Amy and her father William Dorrit, as well as the disenchanted Arthur Clennam, recently returned from abroad, Dickens weaves a suspenseful tale that plumbs the depths of confined minds. Despite the changing fortunes of many of the characters, financial scandal is never far behind them, and they must seek freedom in unexpected ways. Dickens fully employs his masterful irony, humor, and mature writing to create a powerful story about both physical and psychological imprisonment, as well as the freedom of a spirit that feels love.
