Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) was an admired 19th century French writer. He became one of the leading artists since Gustave Flaubert and is considered to be one of the fathers of the modern short story. Maupassant's stories are characterized by their wealth of style, clever plotting and effortless resolutions. Considered Maupassant's greatest novel, «Pierre and Jean» is vivid, satirical, and emotionally profound. The Roland brothers, Pierre and Jean, have always been driven by competition. When a lawyer arrives at the house of their parents to declare that an old family friend has bestowed his entire fortune to Jean, the envy hastily becomes an ardent force for Pierre. Roaming the seaport of Le Havre alone, Pierre contemplates, desperate to come to terms with his brother's success. Why didn't he get a share of the friend's estate? «Pierre and Jean» is a powerfully personal story of jealously, suspicion, and family love.
Many of his stories are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s, describing the futility of war and the innocent civilians who, caught in the conflict, emerge from catastrophe and change. «Bel Ami», written at the height of Maupassant's career, is his second novel, published in 1885. The story chronicles Georges Duroy's corrupt rise to power. Georges, a down-and-out journalist, comes from a humble background yet concocts a spectacular rise to the top of Parisian society, most of which he achieves by manipulating a series of powerful, intelligent and wealthy mistresses. «Bel Ami» is not only a vivid portrait of a glamorously crooked and long-vanished Paris, but also a strikingly modern depiction of the destructiveness of unconstrained ambition, sex and power.
The French author Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) was a master of the short story, creating detailed character studies and brief but moving dramas well suited to the genre. The nine stories in this collection provide a vivid portrait gallery of his typical subjects — from simple peasants and prostitutes to soldiers, government clerks, and provincial bourgeois. Brilliantly naturalistic, these short works also reveal Maupassant's ability to observe the innumerable details of everyday life and reproduce them artfully and accurately, often with a caustic sense of humor. His literary talents are amply displayed in this volume, which includes these memorable tales: «Ball-of-Fat,» regarded by many as technically one of the finest short stories ever written, «The Necklace,» «A Piece of String,» «Mme. Tellier's Establishment,» «Mademoiselle Fifi,» «Miss Harriet,» «A Way to Wealth,» «My Uncle Jules,» and «The Horla.»
A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant’s stories are characterized by their economy of style and efficient, effortless dénouements. Many of the stories are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s and several describe the futility of war and the innocent civilians who, caught in the conflict, emerge changed. He authored some 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books, and one volume of verse. The story «Boule de Suif» («Ball of Fat», 1880) is often accounted his masterpiece. His most unsettling horror story, «Le Horla» (1887), was about madness and suicide.
