Le Cid
" Le Cid " de Pierre Corneille est une pièce de théâtre tragi-comique en vers. Don Diègue et le comte de Gomès projettent d'unir leurs enfants Rodrigue et Chimène, qui s'aiment. Mais le comte, jaloux de se voir préférer le vieux Don Diègue pour le poste de précepteur du prince, offense ce dernier en lui donnant une gifle. Don Diègue, trop vieux pour se venger par lui-même, remet sa vengeance entre les mains de son fils Rodrigue qui, déchiré entre son amour et son devoir, finit par écouter la voix du sang et tue le père de Chimène en duel. La pièce remporte un énorme succès : on en donne trois représentations à la cour, deux à l'hôtel Richelieu et une traduction anglaise paraît à Londres avant la fin de l'année 1637. Richelieu protège Corneille, et le fait anoblir par le roi en 1637.
Médée
La pièce se situe à Corinthe. L'héroïne de la pièce, la magicienne Médée, est répudiée par Jason après lui avoir donné deux enfants et est condamnée à l'exil par Créon, roi de Corinthe. Ce dernier, père de Créuse consent au mariage de sa fille avec Jason. Folle de rage, Médée accomplit sa vengeance en brûlant Créuse à l'aide d'une robe enchantée, et en égorgeant ses propres enfants. Le dernier acte se termine sur la fuite de Médée sur un char tiré par deux dragons et sur le suicide de Jason.
