The Charterhouse of Parma
The Charterhouse of Parma explores the fortunes of Fabrice del Dongo, a young nobleman and devoted admirer of Napoleon. The plot is set primarily in the court of Parma, Italy, during the early 19th century. It is regarded as one of Stendhal's masterpieces, exceptional because of its favorably sophisticated portrayal of human psychology and its precisely illustrated descriptions. Stendhal describes both the ardent passion and the preference for court conspiracy present in the Italian character. Yet, he does this with satire and a political commentary, indeed French, thereby creating not only a fantastic realistic novel but a work that comments on the romantic novels that have gone before. The book is noted as an earlier example of realism, a sharp contrast to the Romantic style prevalent during the time Stendhal was writing. It is believed by many respected authors to be a genuinely revolutionary work. It is undoubtedly a captivating exploration of what inspires people and how they behave.
The Red and the Black
The Red and the Black is a psychological historical novel that accounts for the attempts of a regional young man to grow socially beyond his humble upbringing with a blend of skill, hard work, deception, and hypocrisy. He ultimately allows his passions to betray him. The novel has a two-fold literary purpose, being both a psychological portrait of the romantic protagonist, Julien Sorel, and an analytic, sociological satire of the French social order under the Bourbon Restoration. The story is set in the later years of the Bourbon Restoration and the 1830 July Revolution that launched the Kingdom of the French. Sorel is a sensitive and wise young man who, after seeing no way to progress in the military following Napoleon's fall, attempts to make his place in the church. This novel is a lot more than a coming of age story. It is remarkably accurate in psychological factors and a valuable record of the history and politics of post-Revolution France. The title refers to both the uncertainties in Sorel's character and the clashing choice he is faced with in his pursuit for success: the army denoted by red or the church by black.
Armance
Armance is a romance novel following the story of Octave de Malivert, a quiet but intelligent young man almost out of a reputed higher education institute, drawn to Armance Zohiloff, who reciprocates his feelings. The novel explains how a series of misunderstandings have kept the lovers Armance and Octave apart. The young man Octave, a cynic at heart, falls in love, and this love of a pure and devoted girl changes his personality but stays sensitive to episodes of low moods, sulking frequently and behaving unwisely. On the other hand, the girl, Armance, is a steady character, but conservative and tender, she pulls back from time to time until the situations bend in her favor, only to face the fateful results of the discomfiting character of the man she loves. Stendhal's impressive writing style, absorbing plot, and incredible characterization make it a remarkable novel that leaves a long-lasting impact on the reader.

The Charterhouse of Parma chronicles the adventures of the young Italian nobleman Fabrice del Dongo from his birth in 1798 to his death. Fabrice grows up surrounded by intrigues and alliances for and against the French. At young age he pulls a rather quixotic effort to join Napoleon on his return to France wandering onto the field at the Battle of Waterloo where he gets seriously wounded and lucky to survive. Upon his return to Parma, Fabrice becomes a protégé of his aunt Gina who sends him to seminary school in Naples with the idea that he becomes a senior figure in the Parma's religious hierarchy. After several years of theology school, during which he has many affairs with local women, Fabrice returns to Parma where his free spirit keeps pushing him to new intrigues, schemes and affairs, which lead to many trials and tribulations.
