A half-century-old curse lies over the small community of Ridgewater ever since Sarah Chase died in a car accident during a teen-angst-driven game of chicken back in 1962. She perished in the back seat of a 1961 Impala, accompanied by a group of boys who called themselves «the big four.» She screamed as the car careened through a guardrail and plunged into the icy river water beneath. The four boys survived. Sarah did not.
Teenagers still race and party at the Milvian Bridge where Sarah's car went over, especially on the anniversary of her death, in hopes of catching a glimpse of her unsettled ghost.
But the partying teenagers of Ridgewater don't know that in life Sarah belonged to a group of teenage girls who practiced witchcraft. They don't now that Sarah seeks to use her powers from the grave to avenge her unrequited vendetta. They don't know that Stan Corelis, the driver of the Impala that terrible night and the unpronounced protector of Ridgewater, has passes away, freeing Sarah to unleash her anger.

    Small Town Monsters

    Craig Nybo

Mayhem explodes when monsters mix with guns, rednecks and beer. Craig Nybo's second novel, Small Town Monsters, visits the town of DePalma Beach, Montana, a peaceful lake community with a five-star rating in any tour travel guide. Monster hunter isn't in the job description when Kurt McCammus, a Los Angeles homicide detective, leaves the big city and all its violence behind to take a job as chief of police in DePalma Beach. He falls in love with the clean air and peaceful community. That is until a local rancher finds 50 head of sheep mutilated on his spread. The people of DePalma Beach turn to superstitions, believing that monsters have caused the mutilations. Chupacabras, bigfoot, aliens, werewolves, and wendigos all make the suspect list. Kurt must get to the bottom of the mutilations while keeping the good ol' boys of DePalma Beach from hitting the woods all liquored up for a monster hunt. The pressure escalates when bodies begin to stack up. As Kurt investigates the murders, even his sense of reason wavers. Could it be true that DePalma Beach is crawling with monsters?
Author's Note When I wrote Small Town Monsters, I wanted to get back to the basics of gothic horror. Shortly before writing this novel, I found myself revisiting classic horror stories such as Mary Shelly's Frankenstein and Bram Stoker's Dracula. In Bram Stoker's work in particular, I found a visceral terror that I haven't seen emulated in recent fiction. It seems that readers are are drawn to the humanity of monsters. We want to see them act like people. We want to live next door to them. We want to have love affairs with them.
Not so with the werewolves of Montana found in my novel, Small Town Monsters. These werewolves–monsters in the dark–behave more like forces of nature, enormous, hungry, visceral. It takes an intrepid monster hunter to go out into the night when such a monster calls. If you are after werewolves with class and poise, monsters who might have a softer, more human side, go somewhere else. In Small Town Monsters, its all about fear and intensity. If you enjoy scary books as much as I do, welcome to the small town of DePalma Beach the setting of my story. Here, there be monsters. Happy reading and even happier dreams.

    Allied Zombies for Peace

    Craig Nybo

It's Zombies vs. the KKK in Allied Zombies for Peace. This novel discloses the explosive 42-minutes that transpired during the 1968 Veteran's Day Parade in Columbus, OH. Sparks fly when the Allied Zombies for Peace, a civic organization with sights on undead enfranchisement come to blows with the KKK, their long-time rival. Meanwhile with amped up tension between marching Vietnam War Veterans and members of an anti-war movement known as the New Revolutionaries for Peace and Love, also demonstrating in the parade, the streets of Columbus turn into an all-out war zone.
Allied Zombies for Peace presents an interesting alternate history perspective in true thriller, pulp fashion. The zombie rules are broken and urban combat breaks out into undead chaos. As far as civil rights historical fiction, Allied Zombies for Peace might feature monsters, but the kernels of the civil rights movement rest at the core of this fast-paced scary book.
Author's Note The late 60's is one of the most turbulent time periods in American history. In the year 1968 many shaping events, most of them to the detriment of the nation, occurred. Among those events: Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated, Robert F. Kennedy is assassinated, the battle of Khe Sanh in Vietnam occurs where American soldiers unnecessarily kill hundreds of innocent people, the Tet Offensive occurs, police clash with anti-war protestors at the Chicago Democratic Conference.
I chose the American mid-west, 1968 as the setting for my civil rights historical fiction novel, Allied Zombies for Peace. It's easy to argue that this pulp thriller has nothing to do with civil rights and the making of America due to the fact that the story features tons of zombie chaos. I argue otherwise. In the thrall of undead urban combat that lights up the bulk of this story, one can see the true sentiments of the civil rights movement. The zombie fallout with the KKK could just as easily be pinned on another true-to-life faction of the era.
The entire novel takes place within a 42-minute time period. One can't even read the book in real time. The story bounces between the perspectives of zombies, Klansmen, Nam vets, policemen, and anti-war demonstrators. This became difficult as an author. I had to balance a whole pallet of stories while limiting my characters to a reasonable number.
I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I did writing it.

    Terrifying Lies

    Craig Nybo

In this collection of nineteen short stories, Craig Nybo invites you to visit the lives of mostly unfortunate souls as they face the most terrifying moments of their existences. With everything from vampire hunting to zombie bashing, from steampunk death devices to shifty soul brokers, Nybo brings his own sense of perspective and, of course, his sense of humor to this collection of departures from reality. Terrifying Lies contains Nybo's acclaimed story, «The Mechanic,» along with eighteen other tales of the macabre.
Whether you are looking for scary stories for adults or a collection of scary stories for sleepovers, Terrifying Lies sits at the top of even the most discerning list of scary books on the market. If you are looking for a scary book of short departures into darker realms, pick up a copy of Terrifying Lies.
From the Author I love short fiction. Sadly, short stories currently are not in demand. They belong to a bygone world where people subscribed to pulp magazines like Weird Tales and Amazing Stories. There are still periodicals and anthologies around, but they just don’t sell well. It seems now that we short story writers have lost our readers to smart phone aps and social networking. Oh well, times change. Call me a relic, but I still enjoy a good yarn written in 1,500 to 7,500 words.
Short story writing is a craft in and of itself. I have read too many short stories that are nothing more than a snatch of time during a character’s every-day life, or a description of a rogue walking down a dark street. Characters that make life-changing decisions and suffer the consequences drive the best short stories. I hope you enjoy this collection. Consider them peeks into the lives of mostly unfortunate souls as they face their penultimate hours of elation or dread.
The problem of presentation order beset me as I put this compilation together. In the end, I decided to put them in order from longest to shortest. I think it might give you the sense of reading downhill. It’s always more fun to run down than to trod up.

Funk Toast and the Pan-Galactic Prom Show

    Craig Nybo

Death, Resurrection, and Rock and Roll. Book 2 in the Pan-Galactic Prom Show duology. Hundreds of alien creatures gather at the Collundrome, an asteroid party venue, for the Pan-Galactic Prom Show, the biggest bash in the known universe. Funk Toast, an Earth band, is slated to headline the event. But Knolar Jex, intergalactic pirate and terrorist, has his own nefarious plans for this year's extravaganza. Meanwhile…Twana Burch and a few friends bring a cloned version of Bieber–the assassinated intergalactic pop idol–to the party with the intention of putting him on stage before the Prom Show audience. With enough media attention, Twana hopes to resurrect Bieber's career and rekindle the hearts of millions of teenage fans. Meanwhile…A special detachment of Ice Beetle soldiers from planet Hull also have their eyes on the Pan-Galactic Prom Show stage. Having left their planet at war and fearing the extinction of their species, they hope to solicit aid to their planet by delivering news of their ominous plight in the form of a rock and roll show.
From the Author Funk Toast and the Pan-galactic Prom Show picks up the story of Twana Biurch, a superfan who clones her pop idol, teaches him to sing and dance and takes him to an off-world venue to play the ultimate gig. Her goal: revive Bieber's career and maybe experience a little teen romance along the way.
Funk Toast and the Pan-galactic Prom Show is not a Bieber biography book. The character named Bieber in this novel is referenced only by his last name. Although the character is an international pop idol, the Bieber dealt with in Funk Toast and the Pan-galactic Prom Show comes as clean-slated clone with no memory of his stardom.
Funk Toast and the Pan-galactic Prom Show is my contribution to the growing pool of funny science fiction novels. I wrote Funk Toast and the Pan-galactic Prom Show in the spirit of Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the universe. I have been a long-time fan of funny science fiction characters such as Arthur Dent, Zaphod Beeblebrox, and, of course, Marvin the depressed robot. Why not Bieber?
With so many YA fiction books to read in the world, I felt that the young adult audience would like a good teenage romance book. Funk Toast and the Pan-galactic Prom Show is a funny romance book for young adults. Let's face it, there are so many YA fiction authors out there releasing status quo teen romance stories, I felt like the less-likely genres of cyberpunk and genetic engineering might be a perfect place to set a teenage romance comedy book.
The science behind Bieber's Finger comes from a place of comedy rather than hard science. There are human cloning books that explore in detail the wonders of genetic engineering. Nevertheless, Bieber's Finger, as a clean funny teen romance book that I believe can confidently take its place in human cloning books fiction.
