    Padres e hijos

    Ivan Turgenev

    Fathers and Sons

    Ivan Turgenev

Ivan Turgenev's «Fathers and Sons» is considered to be one of the author's greatest literary achievements. It is novel about the clash of ideologies of two generations. The older generation, or the fathers, represents an aristocracy whose power and influence is fading and giving way to the younger generation, or the sons, who represent to middle class nihilistic ideology. «Fathers and Sons» is a brilliant work that captures the tension that existed among generations and class in the pre-revolutionary era in Russia.

The Diary of a Superfluous Man and Other Stories

    Ivan Turgenev

Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) stands as one of Russia's most influential authors. Along with Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, he helped shape the Russian novel and consequently the Russian identity. Born into wealth, Turgenev had a compelling vision of nobility and the perils of serfdom. His profound novels and short stories made him internationally revered. In this collection of short stories, Turgenev characterizes the «superfluous man»—an archetype which becomes central to the rest of his work and Russian literature at large. This idea of an idle, nihilist nobleman characterized by inaction pervades Russian literature throughout the 19th century. Here, in «The Diary of a Superfluous Man», we see one of its earliest iterations. Also included is «A Tour in the Forest» and several more. Turgenev's unique treatment of romance, sociology, and the Russian spirit are all explored here through his commanding, realist prose.

    Virgin Soil

    Ivan Turgenev

With the publication of «A Sportsman's Sketches» in 1852 Ivan Turgenev established himself one of the leaders in the movement of Russian literary realism. Abandoning the idealized vision of Romantic literature, Realism seeks to present the true struggles of the human existence. In «Virgin Soil», his final novel, we see a continuation of the themes present throughout his other works. At the heart of the novel is the story of a young man and woman who are torn between love and politics. The novel is set against the populist underground revolutionary movement in the second half of the 19th century in Russia, a movement that seeks to awake the sleeping masses and take back the country from the ruling classes. With its beautiful descriptions of the provincial Russian countryside and a humorously depicted cast of characters, «Virgin Soil» stands as one of Turgenev's most ambitious efforts to do justice to the problems of contemporary Russian society.
