    Ghosts

    Curdella Forbes

The futuristic Caribbean island of Jacaranda is a place under the constant pressures of crime, globalisation, advancing technology and environmental decay. Under these ominous skies Curdella Forbes builds a compelling tale of love, murder and psychological mayhem – a forbidden, tragic love affair, and a family torn apart by injustice.
Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Jamaica's independence, and written in a heady, lyrical mix of English and Jamaican Creole, Ghosts gleams with Caribbean spirituality, reflects on the timeless capacity of the human heart, and marks an important contribution to West Indian literature as a whole.

    A Tall History of Sugar

    Curdella Forbes

'Captivating from the very first page' Jennifer Egan
Discovered amidst a tangle of sea grape trees by the childless Rachel Fisher, baby Moshe’s provenance is a thing of myth and mystery; his unusual appearance, with blueish, translucent skin and duo-toned hair, only serves to compound his mystique.
Equally feared and ridiculed by peers as he grows up, he finds a surprising kindred soul in the striking and bold Arrienne Christie, but their complex relationship is fraught with obstacles that tear them apart as powerfully as they are drawn together.
Beginning in the late 1950s, A Tall History of Sugar’s epic love story sweeps between a rural Jamaica, scarred by the legacies of colonialism, and an England increasingly riven by race riots and class division.

    A Tall History of Sugar

    Curdella Forbes

Though uniquely its own, A Tall History of Sugar shares themes with Marlon James's work. Akashic was very successful with James's debut novel, John Crow's Devil, and James has gone on to win numerous awards for his literature, including the Man Booker Prize for his third novel. Curdella Forbes's novel is equally as strong as James's novels, and we are confident James's large literary audience will embrace A Tall History of Sugar as well.In addition to the comparison's to Marlon James, the novel is also influenced by Gabriel Garcia-Marquez. Akashic is very well-connected to the Caribbean/Jamaican literary community, and Forbes's novel will be supported by Marlon James, Kwame Dawes, Colin Channer, etc. This is our lead literary fiction title for the season. A year before the print release of the book, there was a bidding war for the audiobook rights and these were eventually sold to Recorded Books for one of the biggest deals we've done for a literary work; we are also expecting a larger than normal offer from a very prominent UK based publisher.
