Industry in the Wilderness
Filled with photographs, both historic and contemporary, this engaging book looks at the industrial pioneers of northwestern Ontario, and the activities which brought them to the wilderness: surveying, railroading, lumber, gold, bush piloting, transportation, and hydro power. The Belgians in Ontario chronicles more than 300 years of Belgian presence in Ontario, beginning with Father Louis Hennepin, the Recollet missionary who accompanied La Salle on his explorations. This book examines the contributions of the Belgian community in a diverse range of activities including agriculture, sports, and the arts. Magee offers a detailed analysis of reasons and methods of immigration (including a study of the pioneering agricultural labourers who participated in the swallow migration). A Scandinavian Heritage
The Scandinavian presence has been felt in many parts of Canada, including the Windsor-Detroit border region. A Scandinavian Heritage surveys the numerous conributions made in this area by the people of 5 nations: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. The history of these people, from the first settlers to the present is explored in detail. The experiences common to each of the nationalities are shown and contrasted to the unique perspective brought by each group to this country.
