Però Lantier aviat es veurà atrapat per la vinculació amb els Roubaud i, per a la seva dissort, esdevindrà l'amant de Séverine. La novel·la ha estat adaptada en diverses ocasions al cinema: destaquen sobretot les versions de Jean Renoir (1938) protagonitzada per Jean Gabin, i de Fritz Lang (1954) amb Glenn Ford en el paper principal.

Das Paradies der Damen (im Original: Au Bonheur des Dames) vom französischen Autor Émile Zola erschien 1884 als elfter Roman des zwanzigbändigen Romanzyklus' Die Rougon-Macquart – Natur- und Sozialgeschichte einer Familie unter dem zweiten Kaiserreich. Anhand der Geschichte der Protagonistin Denise, einer Verkäuferin, die aus der Provinz nach Paris kommt und im Paradies der Damen eine Anstellung findet, wird das Wachstum und die Struktur dieses Kaufhauses und gleichzeitig der Niedergang des kleingewerblichen Einzelhandels eines kompletten Pariser Stadtviertels beschrieben. "Die Eroberung von Plassans" heißt der vierte Teil der Romanfolge «Die Rougon-Macquard», der Saga einer französischen Familie aus dem Zweiten Kaiserreich. Der Eroberer ist der Klerikalismus. Der Dichter zeigt uns, wie ein schlauer Geistlicher, der sich in die Familie Franz Mourets (eines Sohnes der Ursula Macquart und des Hutmachers Mouret) einzuschleichen weiß, allmählich die Frau des Hauses vollständig in seine Gewalt bekommt und durch diese Frau seinen verderblichen Einfluß zugunsten des herrschenden Bonapartismus weiter und weiter ausbreitet. Der Familie Mouret selbst wird die Bekanntschaft des Geistlichen (Abbé Faujas) geradezu verhängnisvoll. Die Kinder verlassen das Haus; die Eintracht zwischen Mann und Frau ist geschwunden. Die Frau verfällt der Frömmelei, vernachlässigt ihr Haus, entbrennt in sträflicher Leidenschaft zum Abbé. Der Gatte wird wahnsinnig und zündet sein Haus an, wobei er, der Abbé und dessen Mutter umkommen.

Germinal
The novel's central character is Étienne Lantier, previously seen in L'Assommoir (1877), a young migrant worker who arrives at the forbidding coalmining town of Montsou in the bleak far north of France to earn a living as a miner. Sacked from his previous job on the railways for assaulting a superior – he befriends the veteran miner Maheu, who finds him somewhere to stay and gets him a job pushing the carts down the pit. Étienne is portrayed as a hard-working idealist but also a naïve youth;.
The Kill (La Curée)
One of the most important, though controversial, French novelists of the late nineteenth century, and founder of the Realist movement, was Émile Zola (1840-1902). He was the most important example of the literary genre of naturalism, and an integral part of developing theatrical naturalism. «The Kill» is the second book in Zola's «Les Rougon-Macquart», a twenty-volume series about a fictional family during the Second French Empire. The Kill, a second translation of «La Curée», undertaken by poet and literary critic Alexander Teixeira de Mattos, is believed to be the far superior edition when compared to the first attempt, «The Rush for the Spoil», by John Stirling. La Curée literally means the portion of game fed to hunting dogs, a title relevant to the story itself, one of societal inequality and ruthless classism. This novel met with much acclaim for its realism, despite the fact that Zola himself had never personally experienced the opulent lives of the upper-class of which he so eloquently wrote.
