A fines del siglo pasado se inició una especie de diáspora desde lo geográfico hacia otras áreas disciplinares y, al mismo tiempo, una diversificación de las líneas de investigación que tradicionalmente abordó la geografía. Este libro es un ejemplo de los mencionados esfuerzos de expansión del campo de estudio de la disciplina, pese a que la religión fue tema de estudio en los inicios de la geografía cultural decimonónica, cuestión que se interrumpió con el advenimiento de la centuria pasada. El siglo XX elevó a la condición de santos a una gran cantidad de católicos, se crearon nuevas religiones y se internacionalizaron otras, evidencias del vitalismo contemporáneo del hecho religioso. En este contexto, el presente libro analiza la evolución en las regiones metropolitanas chilenas desde una espacialidad unirreligiosa hacia otra plurirreligiosa y aborda la distribución geográfica de los once credos más relevantes en Chile. Se concluye que, pese a los signos de secularización imperantes, la clave religiosa sigue siendo un factor relevante en las prácticas socioespaciales y cotidianidades de un porcentaje importante de la población, y que, pese a todo, los templos siguen participando del paisaje urbano y rural chileno, y se perciben como lejanos los tiempos en los cuales las iglesias alberguen supermercados o discotecas, como acontece en el modelo de secularización europea.
