China Versus The Us: Who Will Prevail?

Alfredo Toro Hardy

The heralding of ambitions and hardening of geopolitical and military stances by China has given rise to few questions: Did China challenge the United States too hard and too soon and, by doing so, seriously jeopardize its chances of achieving its objectives? Can Washington still contain China's ascendancy and retain its current leading status? This book attempts to explore these questions and analyse if China has tried to display its strength to America too soon. It argues that by comparing the comprehensive national power of the two countries, one may be able to answer the above questions.Contents:

Acknowledgments

About the Author

Foreword

Introduction

The Good Years

The Unraveling

Sailing Against the Wind

The Convergence Aptitude

The Mistakes Avoidance Aptitude

The Universality Aptitude

The Military Aptitude

The Economic Aptitude

The Technological Aptitude

Conclusion

Bibliography

Index

Readership: General public; scholars, graduate and undergraduate students studying international business, political science, international relations, American Studies, and China Studies.China;United States;National Power;Economic Growth;Trade War;Convergence Capability;Military Might;Technological Competition;Cultural Universality;South China Sea;East China Sea;Thucydides Trap;First Island Chain;Second Island Chain;Middle Kingdom;Exceptional Nation;Chinese Communist Party;White House;Indian Ocean;India;Russia;Japan;Iran;Made in China 2025;China Dream;Fourth Industrial Revolution;TPP;Pivot to Asia0Key Features:

Only book that compares the comprehensive national power of both China and the United States

Weapons Of The Rich. Strategic Action Of Private Entrepreneurs In Contemporary China

Thomas Heberer

This book provides a fresh perspective on the political agency of private entrepreneurs in contemporary China. Most Chinese scholarship describes this group as being politically acquiescent due to systematic co-optation by the party state. This book, however, argues that private entrepreneurs should be understood, and analytically conceptualized, as a 'strategic group' that makes use of different formal and informal channels to safeguard and expand its interests, though so far it has not challenged the current regime. State-business relations in contemporary China should thus be understood not in terms of mere clientelism, but as a dynamic symbiosis in which private entrepreneurs contribute substantially to policy and institutional change. This book is based on several years of comparative empirical fieldwork across China. With its rich and unique qualitative data and insights, this volume contributes significantly to our understanding of the political behaviour and impact of private entrepreneurs in contemporary China. Automation and the Future of Work

Aaron Benanav

Silicon Valley titans, politicians, techno-futurists and social critics have united in arguing that we are living on the cusp of an era of rapid technological automation, heralding the end of work as we know it. But does the much-discussed 'rise of the robots' really explain the jobs crisis that awaits us on the other side of the coronavirus? In Automation and the Future of Work , Aaron Benanav uncovers the structural economic trends that will shape our working lives far into the future. What social movements, he asks, are required to propel us into post-scarcity, if technological innovation alone can’t deliver it? In response to calls for a universal basic income that would maintain a growing army of redundant workers, he offers a counter-proposal.

Global Manufacturing and Secondary Innovation in China

Xiaobo Wu

Innovation studies have long been confined to the theoretical system established by the scholars of developed countries in the West. It is difficult to use these studies to understand the real nature and law of technological innovation in developing countries. This book, in an innovative manner, studies the theoretical system of secondary innovation, and reveals the evolution law and dynamic innovation mode of the activities carried out by technologically backward countries. It does so by laying an important foundation for the development of management science theory on the basis of the standpoint and characteristics of developing countries.Contents:

Introduction

Theoretical and Practical Background for Constructing Secondary Innovation Theory

Secondary Innovation Dynamic Process Model

Evolution and Development of the Secondary Innovation Theoretical Model

Secondary Innovation and Dynamic Mode of Organizational Learning

Cultivation of Technology Innovation Capability in the Dynamic Process of Secondary Innovation

Conclusion

Summary and Prospects

Readership: Readers who are interested in technological innovation in developing countries.Basic Research;Chinese Manufacturing;Secondary Innovation;Globalization;Industrial Innovation;China0Key Features:

The concept of «secondary innovation» is creative

The book provides typical cases from different industries, which can serve as good references for secondary innovation

The book provides scientific and practical suggestions for improving technological innovation ability and competitive advantage

The G20 (or Group of Twenty) is an international body established to manage the global economy, and includes members from developing economies. This reference set examines the issues facing developing countries and studies the role that the G20 can play in light of continuing challenges and objectives to meet the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).Volume 1 sets out the state of the world economy and the intricate functions of the G20 in policy coordination and economic cooperation. It also deals with the interests and strategies of some developing country members of the G20. These chapters answer questions such as what the country expects from the G20, the strategies adopted to achieve its ends, the extent to which it sees itself as a representative of developing countries in its region and how does it seek to represent them. The G20 has also centred its efforts around helping countries achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Volume 2 concentrates on trade issues and the prospects of achieving the SDGs. In this context, it examines whether the SDGs themselves are a desirable goal in terms of what the nature of development is which underlies these goals.Contents:

About the Editors-in-Chief

Acknowledgements

Introduction

Volume 1: Developing Countries and the Need for G20:

Part 1 State of the World Economy and the Role of the G20:

G20 and International Economic Coordination: Lessons from the Inter-War Years (Manmohan Agarwal)

The Economic Situation of Countries in Sub-Saharan Countries: What Can Be Done by the G20? (Manmohan Agarwal and Amrita Brahmo)

Latin America's Economic Performance: What Ails It? (Manmohan Agarwal and Amrita Brahmo)

What Realistically Can the G20 Contribute to Development? (Manmohan Agarwal and John Whalley)

The 2008–2009 Crisis and Developing Countries (Manmohan Agarwal and Adrita Banerjee)

Part 2 Country Perspectives:

Argentina, G20 and Beyond: The 'Outsider' Saga (Aparajita Gangopadhyay)

Indonesia's Role in the G20: Assessing the Critical Link in the ASEAN Chain (Shankari Sundararaman)

Saudi Arabia and the Millennium Development Goals (P R Kumaraswamy and Md Muddassir Quamar)

Turkey, G20 and Global Governance: Aspiration and Limitation (Anwar Alam)

Index

Volume 2: How Developing Countries can Achieve Sustainable Development Goals:

Part I Trade:

Which Way Forward?
