Den Krieg hatte sie schon als Kind eines Generals kennengelernt, in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts in Prag. Sie wandte sich dem Schöngeistigen zu – und verliebte sich in Wien in den sieben Jahre jüngeren Arthur von Suttner. Mit ihm lebte sie einige Jahre in Georgien. Dort entdeckte sie ihre Leidenschaft für das Schreiben, verfasste für österreichische Zeitungen Essays. Der 1877 wütende russisch-türkische Krieg empörte sie. Zurück in Österreich, wurde sie zur überzeugten Pazifistin. Ihr Roman «Die Waffen nieder!» wurde internationaler Bestseller; sie schilderte darin die Absurdität und die Leiden des Krieges aus der Sicht einer Frau. Und sie trat dafür ein, dass sich die Friedenstifterinnen und Friedensstifter aller Länder vereinen. Bertha von Suttner wurde zur weltweit bekannten Friedenskämpferin, nahm an Friedenskongressen teil, gründete Friedensgesellschaften, auch die «Deutsche Friedensgesellschaft». Heute, wo wieder in Europa der Krieg tobt, ein hochaktuelles Buch.

When I was requested by the Committee of the International Arbitration and Peace Association, of which I have the honour to be a Member, to undertake the translation of the novel entitled Die Wafen Nieder, I considered it my duty to consent and I have found the labour truly a delight. Baroness Suttners striking tale has had so great a success on the Continent of Europe that it seems singular that no complete translation into English should yet have appeared. An incomplete version was published some time since in the United States, without the sanction of the authoress but it gives no just idea of the work. Apart from its value as a work of fiction-great as that is the book has a transcendent interest for the Society with which I am connected from its bearing on the question of war in generaland of the present state of Europe in particular. We English speaking people, whether in England, in the Colonies, or in the United States, being ourselves in no immediate danger of seeing our homes invaded, and our cities laid under contribution by hostile armies, are apt to forget how terribly the remembrance of such calamities, and the constant threat of their recurrence, haunt the lives of our Continental brethren.

Der Roman Die Waffen nieder! ist das bekannteste Werk der österreichischen Autorin und Friedensaktivistin Bertha von Suttner. Das Buch erschien 1889 im Verlag Edgar Pierson in Dresden und erreichte innerhalb kurzer Zeit eine überragende Bekanntheit und Verbreitung und wurde in mehr als 15 Sprachen übersetzt. Die Waffen nieder! galt als das wichtigste Werk der Antikriegsliteratur, bis 1929 Im Westen nichts Neues von Erich Maria Remarque herauskam. Das Thema des Buches ist auch nach fast 130 Jahren seit dem Erscheinen noch hochaktuell.
